Volunteering For Us

What's Involved?

The mainstay of our work may involve the repairing, maintaining, overhauling and even running our collection of locos – but it doesn’t stop there!

Although engineering skills are required to work on maintaining and restoring the locomotives, they aren’t necessary as we are keen for our volunteers to learn on the job, whether in the workshop or on the footplate. If that’s not for you, there’s plenty more!

We need “hosts” who can explain to visitors that the locomotive hauling the train (be it on a heritage railway or railtour) is part of NELPG’s collection, answering their questions about NELPG, its locos and promoting the group & our goals.

Running veteran locomotives is an expensive business so important roles are selling NELPG goods, collecting donations and other fund-raising activities. Of course there is more to us than locomotive repairs and running – behind the scenes there’s many administrative and financial tasks to be done, the list is endless!

If you would like to start a membership and volunteer for us, please feel free to fill out a membership form or contact us to find out more on how you can help the group.

The location of each NELPG working party may vary depending on the location of NELPG Locomotives at the time; typical locations tend to be Deviation Shed in Grosmont and The 1861 Shed in Darlington.

Safety and Workshop training will be given when joining the group and on an ongoing basis. Junior Volunteers will be expected to bring appropriate workshop clothing including safety footwear and overalls but other safety equipment will be provided as necessary.

Please note that there may be a waiting list for joining the group.
