Q6 Cylinder Appeal

2025 Update

We have received delivery at Grosmont for the new cylinder, which awaits fitting to the locomotive, but the Q6 ‘Chip in for a Cylinder’ Appeal remains open.

The appeal has reached £70,000, but the final figures to allow completion of the project are not yet fully known – further giving is welcome – so, if you can, please continue to give to support the return of Q6 63395 to traffic in 2025.

Should the appeal funds exceed the amount directly incurred for the cylinder block renewal, then any excess will be ring fenced and held specifically for any other work required to return the Q6 to traffic and keep her in steam.

What Happened?

Just as things looked set for another successful season with the Q6 having covered over 2,200 miles, disaster struck on 15th May 2023. Just having left the platform at Grosmont station, the Q6’s right-hand cylinder fractured. Other than breakage of the outer cylinder, there was no other readily apparent serious damage, and the locomotive was recovered and moved to the shed.

We plan to have her operational by 2025 to make best use of her boiler certification, due to expire in 2028.
